Salesian Center Arts & Culture Series marks fifth anniversary of death of John Paul II with movie showcasing his life and legacy, Tues., April 6

To mark the fifth anniversary of the death of the Venerable John Paul II, the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture continues its memorial Arts & Culture series with a movie showcasing his life and legacy at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, 2010, in the Gerald White Pavilion in the DeSales University Center. The event is free and open to the public. Space is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Each year since his death, on or near the actual anniversary, we have honored the legacy of John Paul II with a nod to the arts, one of his passions,” said Father Thomas Dailey, OSFS, director of the Salesian Center for Faith & Culture.

This year, The Center marks the anniversary with the showing of the movie, “Testimony: The Untold Story of Pope John Paul II.” The movie is a captivating portrait of the life of Karol Wojtyla and is based on the bestselling book “A Life with Karol: My Forty-Year Friendship with the Man Who Became Pope,” by his personal friend, confidant and personal secretary for more than 40 years, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz. The book is a collection of transcribed conversations with Dziwisz. Italian journalist and Vatican expert Gian Franco Svidercoschi conducted the interviews and the book was published in 2007.

The documentary film moves through archival footage, historical recreations, and intimate interviews with Dziwisz. The movie covers his entire life from his childhood in Poland; his interest in art and theater; his time under Nazi rule; his vocation to the priesthood, elevation to cardinal and eventually pope; his conflict with the Soviet empire; the birth of Solidarity in Poland; the attempts on his life; his world travels; his declining health and his death.

Celebrating 10 years in 2010, the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture’s mission is to promote the interaction of faith and culture, in a mutually beneficial engagement, through academic initiatives that focus on the authentic integration of social concerns and gospel values. The Salesian Center supports intellectual activity in research studies, dialogue events including public forums and lectures and partnership programs. Learn  more about the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture.
