DeSales senior accounting major Caitlin Miller has received the JoAnne Day Student of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers (PennACE). Miller is the first DeSales student to be honored by the organization.
“I feel very proud to be the recipient of this award,” said Miller, of Fogelsville, Pa. “My internship experience was very positive. It offered me the opportunity to learn new skills and also perfect my existing skills, and learn from professionals in the field. It was valuable on so many different levels.”
The award is presented by PennACE annually to outstanding co-ops and interns from their member organizations. Miller was recognized for her work with Concannon, Miller, & Company, a mid-sized CPA firm in Allentown, Pa., and won in the Business Internship Category.
Miller, who was notified about the award at the end of the fall 2009 semester, will receive a monetary award and will be recognized at the PennACE Annual Conference to be held in State College, Pa., in May.
Concannon, Miller, & Company wrote in a statement, “Caitlin’s quality of work was exceptional and her attention to detail was outstanding. Caitlin is a standout among our student interns, not only this year but previous years as well.”
“The award recognizes Caitlin’s years of hard work and perseverance,” said Dr. Amy Scott, assistant professor of business at DeSales. “In her internship, Caitlin had the opportunity to apply concepts and theory taught in her accounting class to real accounting situations with clients.”
While interning at the company, Miller acquired new skills, perfected existing skills, and gained valuable real world experience. Her responsibilities included preparing individual federal, state, and local as well as business tax returns.
According to Miller, she worked on returns for high net worth individuals as well as high school and college students with very little income. The range of the returns was very diverse and provided her with exposure to a number of different scenarios regarding taxes.
“I feel so proud to have a DeSales student win this wonderful award,” said Kate Hunter, director of career services & internships at DeSales. “Caitlin is an amazing young woman who has a very bright future ahead of her. I can not think of a more deserving student to win this award.”
Miller returned to complete the Fall 2009 internship with Concannon, Miller, & Company, after participating in an information technology project during the summer of 2009, and also taking part in a previous internship in Spring 2009.
The internship provided her with the opportunity to familiarize herself with the tax preparation process and become proficient with accounting software such as ProSeries and Creative Solutions. Her communication skills were expanded by working with team members at the firm, and strengthened her networking skills by creating close relationships with the staff at Concannon, Miller& Company. She was also given the opportunity to contact clients to inquire about missing information in their returns thereby learning basic skills in communicating with clients.
While at DeSales, Miller has been a member of the women's basketball team and served as a captain. She also has been involved with the Senior Success Series, the academic advisors advisory board, DeSales admissions welcoming guides (DAWGS), and the student-athlete academic committee (SAAC). She is also a member of the Kappa Xi Chapter of the Delta Mu Delta National Business Honor Society, one of the highest honors a business student can achieve at DeSales.
Miller plans to use the award money to pay for a CPA exam review course so that she can pursue her CPA license. After graduation in May, she will join ParenteBeard, a regional accounting firm, and plans to study for the CPA exam.
