Joyce Rhoads, secretary in the DeSales University Department of Business, and Scott Coval, director of athletics and head basketball coach at DeSales University, have been named Employees of the Year for 2010. Rhoads received the 2010 Support Staff Employee of the Year award. Coval received the 2010 Professional Staff Employee of the Year award. Rhoads and Coval were recognized for their years of service and contributions to the University's success during the Service Excellence Dinner held on the DeSales campus on Tuesday, April 27.
The Employee of the Year awards are given annually to a professional and a support staff member in recognition of outstanding service. Recipients are distinguished for their commitment to the University's mission, witness to the values for which the University stands, and service marked by such characteristics as effort, skill, positive attitude and creativity in the work place.

Rhoads joined the DeSales staff in 1985, as department secretary in nursing. In May 1998, she became department secretary in business. She has served as editor of the Business Matters newsletter since 2005.
“I appreciate the nomination and recognition that the 2010 support staff employee of the year award represents and I would like to thank the DeSales Community for recognizing me,” said Rhoads. “Receiving this award was accomplished with hard work and an ongoing commitment. I feel it’s important to share this recognition with my colleagues and co-workers who have contributed to our DeSales community.”
Prior to DeSales, she worked as a school bus driver for the McCormack Equipment Company in the Southern Lehigh School District. Also, Rhoads served as laboratory secretary for Rohm & Haas Co., tournament secretary for the Philadelphia International Indoor Open Tennis Championships, library bureau secretary for Remington Rand Office Systems, and liaison engineering secretary for Honeywell Inc. In her free time she enjoys gardening, traveling, and reading.
Rhoads was raised in Philadelphia, where she attended Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls. She received her bachelor’s degree in communication from DeSales University in 2002. Currently, Rhoads resides in Coopersburg with her husband of 43 years, Wayne. They have two children and three grandchildren.
Scott Coval, 2010 Professional Staff Employee of the Year
Coval, who joined the DeSales staff in 1993, is in his 17th season as head coach of men’s basketball at the University. During his tenure at DeSales, he has served as director of athletics for 10 years, coordinator of athletic recruiting for 7 years, assistant athletic director for four years, and varsity golf coach for 12 years.
“DeSales University is an incredible place. I am extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with outstanding colleagues and motivated student-athletes,” said Coval. “I am truly honored to win this award.”
While at DeSales, he was named Freedom Conference Coach of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2010. He was named National Association of Basketball Coaches Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year in 2009.
Prior to DeSales, Coval served as assistant basketball coach at Lafayette for five years, Penn State for one year, and at the College of William and Mary, where he started his career, for one year.
A native of Whitehall, Pa., Coval earned a degree in business management from the College of William and Mary in 1986. Currently, he resides in Orefield, Pa., and enjoys spending time with his family, including wife, Kaye, and their three children.
