For the second consecutive year, DeSales nursing students rose to the occasion and displayed both their medical knowledge and their ability to perform well under pressure, as they defeated the competition to win the Third Annual Southeast Regional Student Nurse Challenge of Pennsylvania.
The DeSales team competed against nine other teams representing distinguished nursing education programs from various schools in the region, at the event held at the Abington Memorial Hospital Dixon School of Nursing earlier this semester.
Among the schools participating were: Abington Memorial Hospital Dixon School of Nursing, Alvernia College, Bucks County Community College, Cedar Crest College, DeSales University, Gwenydd-Mercy College, Lehigh Carbon Community College, St. Luke’s School of Nursing at Moravian College, SRMC School of Nursing, and Temple University.
The annual competition provides nursing students with a challenging, yet entertaining way to review for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), the national RN licensing examination.
The DeSales team included traditional BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) students, who will graduate in May 2010, and accelerated second degree BSN students, who will graduate in September 2010.
The traditional BSN students were: Jennifer Gonzalez of Catasauqua, Pa.; Jaime Heck, of Voorhees, N.J., and Kaila Wiand, of Royersford, Pa.
The accelerated second degree BSN students were: Matthew Geer, of Allentown, Pa.; Melissa A. Lehr, of Danville, Pa., and Cassandra Okie, of Chico, Calif.
As the winning team, DeSales received a trophy sponsored by the Pennsylvania League for Nursing and a $500 endowment for their Student Nurses Association fund.
