Jayne DeSales to Hold 3rd Annual Locks of Love Hair Drive, Wed., 4/21/04

DeSales will hold the 3rd Annual Locks of Love Hair Drive at 6 p.m., Wed., April 21, 2004, in the McShea Student Center. DeSales students and members of the faculty and staff will be donating their hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that makes wigs for children suffering from hair loss. The event is sponsored by the Office of Campus Ministry at DeSales.

Stylists from the Salon on Main, Public Image, and the Diane Kaintz Hair Center will be donating their time to help with the event.  Afterward, the hair will be sent to the Locks of Love headquarters in Lake Worth, Fl., where it will be made into high quality hairpieces.

"This is a chance for people to give something that is such a personal gift," says Maggie Riggins, assistant director of campus ministry at DeSales.  "It is a service event that reminds us of a bigger world and that there are people out there with problems and we can help.  It gives children a sense of self-esteem and confidence to face their peers.  It is a giving of yourself that changes yourself."

Locks of Love, established in 1997, utilizes donated hair and resources to provide hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 with medical hair loss. The children receive those $3,500 hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need. Many of the children aided by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition known as alopecia areata, a skin disease that results in the loss of hair on the scalp and the rest of the body.

In addition to the hair drive there will also be an inch-a-thon where students donating their hair can find people to sponsor them for every inch they cut off.  Last year the inch-a-thon raised over $3,000, which was all donated to Locks of Love.  A gift basket of Aveda products worth over $200, a Beanie Bear, and a quilt made by Maggie Riggins will be raffled off to raise more money.

For more information, please contact Maggie Riggins, assistant director of campus ministry at DeSales, at 610-282-1100, ext 1313.
