DeSales University’s Emergency Medical Services (DSU EMS) team recently took first place in the Basic Life Support (BLS) competition at the Pocono EMS Conference.
The Pocono EMS Conference is an annual 3-day educational and networking conference for EMS agencies in Pennsylvania. Conference participants have the opportunity to attend informational sessions on topics relevant to EMS groups; participate in social events; and speak to vendors who visit the conference.
DeSales EMS members who attended the conference are: Megan Hinkle, Lieutenant of DSU EMS; EMT Kyle Kromer; EMT Dana Moore; and DSU EMS co-founder, Mark Ubbens.
As part of the BLS competition, “a team of EMTs is given a scenario similar to the ones that they are given on their state certification exam or similar to what they would see on the street. The team is then required to perform their skills and treat the "patient" as they would if they were working on an ambulance or other EMS entity. The team is scored based on a set of criteria that is determined by the State Department of Health and the National Registry,” according to Kevin Wasson, Captain of DSU EMS.
This was the first year that the BLS competition was part of the conference. Five teams, including DSU EMS competed in the event. Other teams included Cetronia EMS, Elverson EMS, Penn Mahoning EMS and Pocono Mountain EMS. Megan Hinkle and Kyle Kromer competed on the DSU EMS team; Dana Moore served as the alternate.
Other members of DSU EMS who did not attend the conference are: Ryan Arey; Christopher Barron; Juliette Bonn; Mary Kate Boylan; Andrew Cholewa; Joseph Dabbs; William Donald; Kenneth Faust; Ryan Hay; Amelia Kalucki; Kristina Klein; Tyler McLean; Joanna Miller; Kelly Morgan; Ray Nebiker; Christopher Petersen, Director of DSU EMS; Adrianne Pierson; Gustavo Rodriguez; Justin Rohrback; Andrew Sanabria, Lieutenant of DSU EMS; Tonya Schneider; Victoria Storey; Kevin Wasson, Captain of DSU EMS; and Erin Zweizig
