Psychosocial Issues of Adolescent Male Dancers, Topic of Brown Bag Lunch at DeSales, Wed., March 24
BROWN BAG LUNCH AT DE SALES, WED., MARCH 24
The experience of adolescent males in dance will be the focus of the talk, "Boys at the Barre: Examining the Psychosocial Issues of Adolescent Male Dancers," by Dr. Deborah Williams, assistant professor of nursing and health at DeSales University, at noon on Wed., March 24, in Trexler Library at DeSales. The program is part of the Brown Bag Lunch Series and is open to the public free of charge.
In her talk, Williams will draw from her award-winning, three-year research project in which she studied 97 artistically talented boys in dance, and their psychosocial and artistic development. She is the only researcher in the United States and one of only a few internationally involved in such work. Williams' teenage son, a classical ballet dancer, was the impetus for the beginnings of the research when he was three years old.
Williams was honored by the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science for her research work, during an award ceremony in London earlier this year. The award was funded by the Harkness Foundation based in New York.
In addition to being an assistant professor of nursing and health at DeSales University Williams is also the director of health and wellness for the Lehigh Valley School for the Performing Arts.
Trexler Library established the Brown Bag Lunch Series in September 1999. The purpose of the series is to provide faculty, staff, and students an opportunity to share their research projects, personal interests, and hobbies with the whole DeSales University community.
