Fleming Institute for Business Ethics at DeSales University to Host Ethics Bowl Competition
Students from area colleges to compete in event. Judges include professionals & corporate executives from Lehigh Valley area companies.
The Fleming Institute for Business Ethics at DeSales University will hold the 2011 Fleming Institute for Business Ethics Bowl Competition, on Monday, March 28. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the DeSales University Center. The competition will feature students from DeSales University, Moravian and Muhlenberg colleges, and Penn State University, Lehigh Valley Campus.
In preparation for the Ethics Bowl, students received case studies detailing ethical dilemmas in the workplace in advance and prepared their responses. During the competition on Monday (3/28/11), the students will make presentations to a panel of distinguished judges that will include professionals and corporate executives with a wide and varied range of experience from Lehigh Valley area businesses and organizations.
This year’s topic examines healthcare in India. The share of private healthcare services in India has been nearly 80% of total healthcare services, which is comparatively higher than most developed countries. The corporate sector in India has started investing in these services. This sort of corporate hospital boom witnessed by urban India has resulted in the rise of multispecialty and super specialty hospitals in the leading cities. Despite all of this, the average Indian’s access to tertiary medical care remains poor. With no effective government regulation in place, private management of health services to provide universal coverage is questionable.
The competition will offer both undergraduate and graduate rounds. The undergraduate preliminary round will take place during the morning session. The graduate round and the undergraduate final round will take place during the afternoon session. The competition will conclude with the winners of both rounds being announced at the end of the day.
To date, the panel of judges includes: Larry Deal, executive director, The Heart Care Group P.C., Macungie; Kevin Flemming, president, Integrity Personnel, Inc., Allentown; Tom Garrity, strategy and ownership-transition executive, Compass Point Ltd., Allentown; Shelbi R. Gourniak, family owner, Rodale, Inc., Emmaus; Ramona Hollie Major, associate product manager, Crayola, LLC., Easton; Rich Jennings, vice president and financial advisor, Fulton Financial Advisors, Allentown; Pat Lincoln, regional director of sales for Nassau Broadcasting, North Division; Dennis Morton, partner and financial consultant, Concannon Wealth Management, L.L.C., Bethlehem; Rev. Dr. Sherrie L. Sneed, chaplain director of pastoral care, Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg; and Gene Yacapsin, regional sales manager for Hertz Equipment Corporation.
Established in 2009 through the generosity of Richard Fleming and his family foundation, the mission of the Fleming Institute is to promote a culture of ethical awareness and action in business professions, through the collaborative efforts of corporate and educational groups.
The work of the institute is administered by the DeSales University Division of Business, in collaboration with related initiatives of the Salesian Center for Faith & Culture at DeSales. Ultimately, the goal is to engage and enable students to become ethically and socially responsible business contributors through intellectual and professional development.
