PACE Team Recognized at Regional Conference

The DeSales University Peers Advising Counseling Educating (PACE) Team was recently recognized by the BACCHUS Network at the organization’s 2011 regional conference held at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. The group was awarded Outstanding Program for “If These Walls Could Talk.”

“If These Walls Could Talk” is a program that raises awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence. Members of the PACE team read aloud true stories of sexual violence given to them by affected students.

The event, held last fall, drew more than 150 students, faculty, and staff. Also in attendance and were presenting were Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) nurses, members of the local Crime Victims Council, and representatives from Turning Point of the Lehigh Valley, a safe haven for people affected by sexual assault and domestic violence.

In addition to receiving the Outstanding Program award PACE members were selected to present three other initiatives undertaken during the academic year. “Asleep at the Wheel,” a wellness program that focuses on healthy sleep; “The Real Student Body,” a program designed to promote a healthy body image; and “Social Networking: Highway to Success or Freeway to Failure?”
“To have the PACE Team selected to present programs in three out of the four time slots available was impressive,” said Wendy Krisak ’98, advisor to PACE and director of the DeSales University Counseling Center. “It shows the depth of their commitment to providing wellness education on our campus and how well-respected and received their programs are to the other colleges in our area.”

The members of PACE who presented at the conference were: physician assistant major Micah Beckstead ’11 of Landsdale, Pa.; theatre and communication major Eliza Martin ’11 of Narvon, Pa.; sport and exercise science major Josh Medvecky ’12 of Drums, Pa.; accounting and finance major Bill Schmoyer ’12 of Northampton, Pa.; marketing and finance major Kelsey Salmonsen ’11 of Bensalem, Pa.; and musical theatre and communication major Chris Stevens ’11 of Somerdale N.J.

PACE (Peers Advising Counseling Educating) was founded at DeSales University in 2004. The group is composed of students who are trained in the area of peer counseling. PACE also presents educational programs that focus on wellness and personal growth issues and presents alcohol programs for both the DeSales University Office of Student Conduct and at Freshmen Orientation. PACE members are certified through the BACCHUS Network, a national educational network that seeks to promote healthy and safe lifestyle practices among young adults. The PACE team is advised by Krisak, Chad Serfass ’07, PACE advisor and director of the DeSales Experience, and Dr. Gregg Amore, Associate Dean of Students for Student Development.
