On Tuesday, May 3, 2011, Timothy Cowart, chair of the department of dance at DeSales University, will lead a panel discussion of the film, Mao’s Last Dancer, which will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinema. The discussion will follow the film.
Cowart will be joined on the panel by Li Yang, assistant professor of Chinese at Lafayette College and Yu Hong, artistic director of the Pennsylvania Classical Ballet in Northampton, Pa.
The movie is based on the autobiography by Li Cunxin, who was plucked from a poor Chinese village at the age of 11 by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman. Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.
Located at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks, the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinema features independent, foreign, scientific, and documentary film at this new, state-the-art alehouse style cinema.
