On April 10, 2011, 48 students were inducted into the DeSales University Mu Omicron Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
To be considered for induction into the honor society, undergraduate students must have completed at least half of their nursing courses, have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and rank in the top 30th percentile of their class. Graduate students must have an overall Grade Point Average of 3.5 or higher and have completed at least 25 percent of their courses. All students must provide two letters of recommendation from current Sigma Theta Tau members attesting to their leadership and academic abilities.
Founded in 1922 by six nursing students at Indiana University, modern nursing was barely 20 years old when the Society was founded to advance the status of nursing as a profession. The students recognized the value of scholarship and the importance of excellence in practice.
Today, Sigma Theta Tau International has 130,000 members in 86 countries. Members include practicing nurses, instructors, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and others. A total of 470 chapters are located at 586 institutions of higher education throughout the world.
The DeSales University Mu Omicron Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing was established at DeSales in 1983 and received its charter in 1990. Since then, Mu Omicron has inducted more than 500 undergraduate students, graduate students, and nurse leaders into this prestigious society.
The campus induction ceremony also included a welcome from Dr. Margaret Slusser, chairperson for the department of nursing and health at DeSales, the installation of officers, and the presentation, “The Early History of Nursing in Pennsylvania,” by Dr. Patrick Kenny, assistant professor of nursing at DeSales.
