During the ceremony, DeSales President Father Bernard O’Connor, OSFS, will confer degrees upon 412 graduates, including undergraduates, graduates and ACCESS students. Also, Toomey will be awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. Timothy Nolan, chairman of the DeSales University Board of Trustees and a graduate of the class of 1977, will also be awarded the honorary doctor of humane letters.
Toomey was elected to the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania in 2010. He serves on the Budget; Banking; Commerce, Science and Transportation; and Joint Economic committees.
Previously, in 2005, Toomey helped launch a community bank called Team Capital Bank and served as co-chairman of the board of directors from the inception of the bank until he announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate.
In 1998, Toomey ran for the open congressional seat in Pennsylvania’s 15th Congressional District. He ran on a term-limits pledge and a platform of pro-growth tax cuts and fiscal discipline. He won and went on to win two more terms in 2000 and 2002.

During his time in the House of Representatives, Toomey distinguished himself as a fiscal expert, who, according to the Allentown Morning Call, “put his principles ahead of party-line obedience.” His dedication to limited government and cutting taxes earned him recognition from the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, Americans for Tax Reform, the National Taxpayers Union, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
In fulfillment of his three-term pledge, Toomey announced his retirement from the House of Representatives in 2004 and launched a close but unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate.
Toomey grew up in a working class family in East Providence, R.I., the third of six children. His father, a former U.S. Marine, worked for the local electric utility installing underground electrical cable, while his mother worked part-time as a secretary at their parish church.
Toomey graduated as valedictorian from La Salle Academy, an all-boys Catholic high school in Providence, and attended Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree, graduating cum laude, in political science.
After graduating from college, Toomey worked for Chemical Bank and subsequently for Morgan Grenfell, where he arranged and traded interest rate and currency swaps to help businesses manage risk. He also took a one-year stint as a financial consultant in Hong Kong, performing financial research on capital markets.
In 1991, Toomey moved to Allentown, Pa., where he started a small restaurant business, Rookie’s, with his two brothers, Steve and Michael. Over seven years, Toomey Enterprises grew to include two restaurants in Allentown and one in Lancaster County.
