The Baranzano Society to Host Public Forum on Promise and Peril of Increased Drug Use, Monday, Nov. 10

The promise and peril of increased drug use will be the focus of a public forum hosted by the Baranzano Society from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, November 10, in the arena stage of the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts at DeSales. "Elixir of Life," is the Society's first public forum. The event is open to the public free of charge.

The Baranzano Society is a newly formed dialogue group on science and religion, which explores questions focusing on bioethics. Members include university scholars, corporate professionals, and medical practitioners.

The "Talking Circles" public forum will begin with an overview by Professor Michael Raposa of Lehigh University. Raposa will refer to recent findings that some 85 million adults in the United States currently use prescription medication and contribute to a $23 billion market for lifestyle drugs. The most dramatic increase in new users of prescription drugs for non-medical purposes is among 12- to 17-year olds. At the university level, the percentage of students who take psychotropic drugs has increased from 7 percent in 1992 to 18 percent in 2001.

Invited speakers include Stephen Lammers, professor of religion at Lafayette College; Rodger Berg, associate professor of chemistry at DeSales, and George Isajiw, past president of the Catholic Medical Association.

Guests invited to provide expertise on this issue include representatives from Pfizer pharmaceutical company, Merck research labs and Lehigh Valley Hospital & Health Network.

Audience members will have the opportunity to take part in a question and answer period following the discussion.

The work of the Baranzano Society has been funded through a matching grant from the Metanexus Institute on Science and Religion and the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture at DeSales. For more information on this and other programs, and on membership, contact Father Thomas F. Dailey, OSFS, at (610) 282-1100, ext. 1464, or visit the link at http://www4.desales.edu/SCFC/.
