Clash of Civilization - America and the Middle East, Topic of Talk, Thurs., Nov. 6, at DeSales
Center Valley, Pa. (November 4, 2003) - "Clash of Civilization - America and the Middle East," will be the focus of a talk by Thomas M. Ricks, visiting professor in the department of history at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert on the Middle East, at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 6, in Dooling Hall Auditorium at DeSales University. The talk by Ricks is sponsored by the department of humanities at DeSales, in conjunction with the cultural affairs committee. The program is open to the public free of charge.
Ricks spent nearly 35 years researching and living in the Middle East. In addition to teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, he has served as director of international studies and associate professor of history at Villanova University. He also taught in Iran in the early 1970s, and at BirZeit University (Palestine) and Georgetown University. He completed a three-summer Senior Fulbright Research oral history project in the West Bank and Jerusalem in the mid-1990s. In the mid-1960s, he served in the Peace Corps.
Presently, Ricks is revising the textbook, "Middle East: Past and Present," and is writing a monograph on 20th century missionary schools, and Palestinian society and culture.
