Rev. John F. Harvey Awarded Cardinal Cooke Medal During Special Mass At St. Patrick's Cathedral, Mon., Oct. 6

Father John Harvey, OSFS, director of Courage / Encourage International since its founding in 1980, was awarded the Cardinal Cooke Medal of Peace, during a special mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York on Monday, October 6. Father Harvey was recognized for his work with Courage, a spiritual support group for homosexual women and men, who desire to live chastely in accordance with Roman Catholic teaching.

The Cardinal Cooke Medal of Peace, established in 1988, recognizes people who exemplify the life of Christ in this world. It is awarded at the annual Memorial Mass for Cardinal Cooke. This year, October 6 marks the 20th anniversary of Cardinal Cooke's death. The medal will be presented by Archbishop Edwin O'Brien, Military Vicar, USA (Washington, D.C.).

"I am grateful for this award that recognizes the work of Courage leaders and Courage members over many years," said Father Harvey. "Courage witnesses to the truth that persons with same-sex attractions can lead lives of holiness out of love for Jesus Christ."

Courage, instituted by the late Terence Cardinal Cooke, now has nearly 100 chapters worldwide, including in the United States, Canada, England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Poland, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand.

Father Harvey earned his doctorate in moral theology from Catholic University of America. He is the author or co-author of numerous articles in professional theological and psychological journals on human sexuality and counseling. He has taught medical and sexual ethics at DeSales University and is an adjunct professor at St. Joseph Seminary of the Archdiocese of New York, Dunwoodie, and at Seton Hall University.

He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Parents and Friends Christian Ministries Lifetime Achievement Award, the Courage in Faith Award, the Linacre Quarterly Award for Distinguished Writing.

A native of Philadelphia, Father Harvey entered the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales and was ordained a priest in 1944. He currently resides at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pa.
