Current Events
A great way to learn about what is going on in the country or region in which you will be studying.

  • Online Newspapers - Find current news from almost any country!
  • The Economist - Provides great city and country guides with advice on everything from tipping to the location of the nearest U.S. embassy. Some articles are premium content for subscribers, but most information will be free of charge. If a particular article title sparks your interest but is listed as premium content, you can search the DeSales online journal database for access to the article.

Culture Resources

  • Country Insights - From the Centre for Intercultural Learning in Canada, this website provides a great cultural overview of almost any country. The site covers everything from conversation styles, to food preparation, to national heroes.
  • Global Gateway - World Culture and Resources from the Library of Congress

Country-Specific Resourses

  • The Economist - Includes country specific economic forecasts, statistics and links to current events.
  • The Library of Congress, Country Studies - Great guide to many countries that are not represented in the Economist information. This collection was originally established by the U.S. Army to focus on lesser studied areas of the world. It will provide a solid historical background for most countries, but will not be as strong in current event information.
  • U.S. Department of State Background Notes - Includes facts about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations of all the countries in the world with which the U.S. maintains relationships.
  • CIA World Fact Book -Provides maps and a plethora of information for countries and regions of the world.
