Students from DeSales University, including physician assistant majors Andrew Lapsley, Caitlin Trovato, Victoria Martin, and Laura Wroge and nursing majors Bernadette Lobaido, Julianne Wagner, and Amelia Lloyd, participated in the community-based summer internship program, Bridging the Gap (BTG). Mary Ellen Miller, Ph.D., R.N., assistant professor of nursing at DeSales University, served as academic preceptor for the students.
BTG interns work in interdisciplinary teams and partner with community site personnel, community members, BTG interns from other colleges, and faculty from both Pennsylvania and New Jersey affiliate programs to design projects based on community-defined needs and on the students’ professional disciplines and interests.
The projects on which the students worked during the summer of 2011 varied. Wagner and Lloyd implemented a recreation program at an Allentown Summer Camp; Lobaido and Wroge completed a literature review on childhood obesity to serve the Allentown School District; Lapsley and Trovato participated in a community-based cancer outreach program; and Martin collaborated on outreach for a community sexual health program.
