Dedication of National Security Book Collection at DeSales University Trexler Library

The dedication of the National Security Collection will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, November 10, in Trexler Library at DeSales University.

“This incredible collection of books was donated to DeSales University from distinguished members of the intelligence community,” said Andrew Essig, associate professor of political science. “Their contributions were made in support of the political science program’s national security track and the criminal justice program to increase the wealth of knowledge among the student body in the vital area of national security affairs.”

Benefactors of the collection include:

Joseph C. Goulden, an author who previously worked as an underground miner, a counter-intelligence operative and the Washington, D.C., bureau chief for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Dr. John Behling who served as an infantry soldier in World War II before being transferred to the Office of Strategic Services and Military Intelligence, where he continued to work after the war ended. Behling was a member of the Office of Intelligence and Research with the Department of State and also served as a Foreign Service officer in Germany. He has worked as a freelance contract agent for the CIA.

Cameron La Clair, one of the founders of the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The collection, and site of the dedication ceremony, is on the first floor of Trexler Library. The collection includes approximately 1,000 books, all ranging on the topics of national security, espionage, intelligence, global politics, and the Cold War, World War II, and Vietnam.

Faculty and students of the national security track of the DeSales University political science program will also be at the dedication ceremony. The national security track was recently established to provide opportunities to those students interested in a career in the national security community to develop the analytical and communicative skills necessary for students to be successful in this career path, and to achieve a high level of appreciation towards the comprehensive nature of national security studies.
