DeSales PACE Member Recognized at National Conference

The DeSales University Peers Advising Counseling Educating (PACE) Team was recently recognized by the BACCHUS Network at the organization’s 2011 National Assembly, held in Reston, Virginia. PACE member, accounting major Bill Schmoyer ’12, was honored with an Outstanding Student Award.

To be eligible for an award, a group or individual must be nominated. This year there were 650 attendees; only four awards were given. “Winning this award speaks well about the students who come out of DeSales,” said Schmoyer. “People are recognizing DeSales for what we do and that’s incredible.”

In addition to Schmoyer, the members of PACE team who attended the conference were: biology major Brian Collins ’12, criminal justice major Gui Lopes ’13, television & film and marketing major Matt Pirrall ’13, musical theater major Leah Poyo ’13, nursing major Meg Ressel ’12, physician assistant major Kristen Taormina ’13, and dance and psychology major Brianne Taylor ’12.

PACE (Peers Advising Counseling Educating) was founded at DeSales University in 2004. The group is composed of students who are trained in the area of peer counseling. PACE also presents educational programs that focus on wellness and personal growth issues and presents alcohol programs for both the DeSales University Office of Student Conduct and in the past, at Freshmen Orientation.

PACE members are certified through the BACCHUS Network, a national educational network that seeks to promote healthy and safe lifestyle practices among young adults. The PACE team is advised by Wendy Krisak, director of the counseling center, and Andrea Grube, assistant director of Health Center/health educator.

Last year’s PACE team was recognized with an Outstanding Affiliate award, and former student Micah Beckstead ’11, was honored with an Outstanding Student award.
