Foundation Courses 15 credits
Specialty Courses 15 credits
Electives 12 credits
Capstone Thesis   3 credits
Comprehensive Exam
Total 45 credits

Foundation Courses
The purpose of the Foundation Course requirement is to further enhance the student's analytical capabilities and to introduce advanced technological and societal concepts.

IT 501 Computer Architecture  3 credits
IT 502 Discrete Structures  3 credits
IT 507 OO Programming  3 credits
IT 511 Data Management  3 credits
IT 546 Ethical and Social Issues  3 credits

All candidates are required to complete the foundation course requirement. The MSIS Admissions and Academic Policies Committee may waive a certain foundation course for the student who can demonstrate the completion of recent (not more than five years old) equivalent course and experience in the course subject by taking an examination.  No more than three foundation courses may be waived.

Specialty Courses
The Specialty Course requirement provides the opportunity to study advanced technical application concepts and practices. Depending upon their interest, candidates may satisfy the specialty course requirement by studying data base development, project management, security, web engineering, animation or communications. The specific option is jointly designed by the candidate and the candidate's advisor.

Electives
Elective courses are selected from the available courses in the MSIS program. Topics span a wide-range of interest areas and current industry practices. Electives will further enhance the candidate's career goals and interest areas.

Capstone Course
The capstone requirement is to demonstrate the candidate's ability to create a comprehensive and independent work by selecting and completing a project or design. Working with an advisor, the candidate may elect to do a thesis on a contemporary research topic, a project implementation, design, or experiment. Such thesis may cover either 3 or 6 credit hours. In the latter case the number of elective credits is reduced to 12.

Comprehensive Examination
Near the end of their study all candidates are required to pass a comprehensive examination. The purpose of the examination is to demonstrate working knowledge of the topics that are essential to and expected from a professional working in the contemporary information technology environment. The examination may be taken after the candidate has completed the specialty requirement.
