PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS TO SPEAK ON FAITH AND KNOWLEDGE

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., -- As part of the Year of Faith campaign, a symposium on Faith & Knowledge will take place at DeSales University on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the DeSales University Center. The special guest speaker will be Dr. Stephen M. Barr, professor of physics at the University of Delaware, who will be joined by professor of theology at DeSales University, Dr. Rodney Howsare, for this town hall discussion. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture and the Diocese of Allentown. No tickets are required.
Barr received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1978. He does research in theoretical particle physics, with emphasis primarily on grand unified theories and the cosmology of the early universe. He also writes and lectures extensively on the relation of science and religion. Many of his articles and reviews have appeared in First Things, on whose Advisory Council he serves. He is the author of the book Modern Physics and Ancient Faith (Univ. of Notre Dame Press, 2003) , A Student’s Guide to Natural Science (Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2006), and Science and Religion: The myth of conflict (Catholic Truth Society, 2011). He was elected to the Academy of Catholic Theology in 2010 and elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2011.
The Salesian Center for Faith & Culture, in collaboration with the Diocese of Allentown, planned a series of events to celebrate the Year of Faith, which began on October 11, 2012 and ends on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King, on 24 November 2013.
