Bishop Joseph E. Kurtz, formerly of the Diocese of Allentown, to deliver annual R. Wayne Kraft Memorial Lecture, Wed., Feb. 2

The Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., bishop of the Diocese of Knoxville and formerly of the Diocese of Allentown, will be the guest speaker for the annual R. Wayne Kraft Memorial Lecture at DeSales University at 7:30 p.m., on Wednesday February 2nd. The event will be held in The Commons of the McShea Student Union and is open to the public free of charge. Bishop Kurtz will speak on, "Can you hear me now? Preaching in the 21st Century."

The lecture series is an annual event held on the first Wednesday in February that is associated with DeSales University's Patron's Day festivities in honor of R. Wayne Kraft, who died in 1994. Patron's Day is a celebration honoring the feast of St. Francis de Sales, a Bishop and Doctor of the Church. The university's mission and philosophy are both rooted in his theological writings and his pious lifestyle. The Kraft lecture series invites nationally known speakers to provide current theological viewpoints on a variety of subjects related to the Salesian Spirituality.

Bishop Kurtz was appointed by Pope John Paul II on October 26, 1999 to serve as the bishop of the Diocese of Knoxville. Before receiving this position, Kurtz served as a priest for 27 years in the Diocese of Allentown. Here, Kurtz was in charge of social services, diocesan administration and parish ministry. Kurtz also received the prominent title of "monsignor" and also served on many boards of directors in the Allentown Diocese before going to Tennessee.

As a professor of metallurgy and material science at Lehigh University, Kraft held two patents and wrote more than 50 articles and reports in technical and professional journals. While an adjunct professor at Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales (currently DeSales University), Kraft wrote four books on and taught about the philosophy of Teilhard de Chardin.

For more information on the lecture, please contact the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture at DeSales (610) 282-1100, ext. 1244.
