DeSales Staff Members Honored in National Smoke-Free Campaign to Give Brown Bag Lunch Program, Thurs., Feb. 10

DeSales University staff members, Wendy Krisak, assistant director of the counseling center, and Fern Strunk, director of health services, received the College Policy Advocate Award in recognition of their work with the Coalition for a Smoke-Free Valley. The award was presented at the 14th Annual Smoke-Free Leadership Awards and Volunteer Recognition Breakfast Event last month. Every year, the organization recognizes people who significantly contribute to the Lehigh Valley community by helping make it a healthier place.

Krisak and Strunk have brought their work to the DeSales campus and have helped organized a Brown Bag Lunch to take place at noon, Thursday, February 10, in the Trexler Library, for the DeSales community only. In the "Kick Butts with QuitSmart: Free Smoke Cessation Program," there will be handouts and a PowerPoint presentation to present the dangers of smoking along with how students on campus can receive support to stop. Krisak and Strunk will offer options to help ease the stress of stopping the habit by teaching the importance of establishing new behaviors, the effects of hypnosis, and even the use of a false cigarette. The Brown Bag Lunch Series is sponsored by the Trexler Library at DeSales.

Certified in the national QuitSmart Smoke Cessation Program, Krisak and Strunk have helped organized events such as, "Wellness Days" at the university for the past 2 years, in order to help college students learn the dangers of smoking and give them support to quit. They both helped DeSales receive a grant to pay for QuitSmart Program events, training in the program, nicotine patches and other areas related to the smoke-free campaign.

Also, they have organized programs for athletes and theater students to help them become aware of the effects of smoking. The programs stress the importance of changing socializing patterns to prevent being around other smokers and suggest that summer breaks are a good time to stop. Krisak and Strunk provide support to students who are trying to quit smoking and are implementing a service where fellow students can help support their friends and classmates in the effort to stop smoking.
