He cited family considerations, as the main reason. According to Hartzell, Roman considered running because he feels Ervin's tenure as executive has featured too much spending and insufficient cost control. Ervin, who has defended her budget decisions over the years, stated she was happy to avoid a primary fight against a sitting commissioner.
