Greater Lehigh Valley Ad Club helps DeSales Marketing Club expand activities
Members of the Greater Lehigh Valley Ad Club, William Childs and Pat Lincoln, shared their professional insight on successful marketing campaigns and advertising with DeSales students, during a program in the Priscilla Payne Hurd auditorium on Tuesday, March 23. At the conclusion, Nolan Nieman, '06, president of the DeSales Marketing Club, was given a check for $500, on behalf of the Lehigh Valley Ad Club, to help expand activities of the DeSales organization, fund several service learning projects, and provide students with a variety of educational opportunities. The event was postponed from an earlier date, due to inclement weather.
In their presentation, Childs and Lincoln, who have worked in marketing and advertising for over 10 years, drew from their personal experiences. They emphasized how good advertising is not just about the business, but also about the customers it serves. Also, they stressed the importance of a company staying true to its core values because it will "grab an audience and be able to retain it through numerous advertising campaigns."
They cited the work of Steve Jobs, one of the founders of Apple Computers, whose successful advertising campaign used the slogan, "Think Differently." The ad showed people who reflected that philosophy through history, such as Albert Einstein, Miles Davis, and the Dali Llama. After the campaign hit television and billboards across America, Apple stock went from 8 dollars to 80 dollars.
The presenters used examples of good advertisement campaigns, including Heinz Ketchup, Pepsi and Alka Seltzer, to show how humor, the use of location, and simplicity all make effective advertising campaigns. They used a sound clip from the rapper Notorious B.I.G. to illustrate how advertising campaigns can make use of certain mechanisms in order to have people remember them and respond to them.
