DeSales SIFE Team to Host GLAD-ideaters Arena, Sat., April 2
Business, government and education leaders will join students from three area high schools and DeSales University in the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), Glad-ideaters Arena on Saturday, April 2, at DeSales. Student presentations will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Priscilla Payne Hurd Science Center. The awards ceremony will be held from noon until 12:30 p.m. in the DeSales University Center.
The competition, hosted by the DeSales SIFE team, promotes entrepreneurship education and community service-learning across the world.
The high schools of the winning student teams will be awarded cash scholarships. In addition to the $1000 first-place prize, the winning team will go on to compete as Pennsylvania's State Champions in the USA SAGE (Students for the Advancement of Education) Cup. The winner of the USA event will go on to the SAGE World Cup Competition in San Francisco in August.
The DeSales Glad-ideaters competition will feature presentations by students from three local area schools: Bethlehem Catholic High School, Northwestern Lehigh High School and Bucks County Vocational Technical School.
The high school students have been working with DeSales SIFE and Entrepreneurship students to use their business skills for charitable goals. Their projects aid the Heifer International Program in Peru. For one project, a student team from Northwestern Lehigh High School designed a Lance Armstrong-type bracelet using the rainbow colors of the Peruvian flag and the legend, "Help the Hungry."
The program will begin at 9:00 a.m. with welcome remarks and introductions by Michael J. Krajsa, DeSales faculty member in business and SIFE team adviser. This will be followed by the talk, "The Importance of Ethics in Business," by Fr. Christopher Hudgin, OSFS, professor in the humanities department at DeSales.
Presentations from the five high school student teams will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Priscilla Payne Hurd Science Center. Lunch and the awards ceremony will be held in the DeSales University Center, from noon until 12:30 p.m.
