Should I buy a computer before I arrive on campus?
If you already have a PC (or Mac) that meets our recommended standards, you might wish to use it. However, if you are going to purchase a new computer, we recommend getting a laptop. A laptop is an ideal size for our residence hall rooms and when equipped with a wireless feature, can be used in many locations around campus.

I wasn't planning to bring a computer with me to DeSales. Will I be OK?
There are computers available for student use in Dooling Hall and Trexler Library from early morning until late evening. Students may also borrow laptops for use in Trexler Library during library hours.

How can I get online in the DeSales residence halls?
Rooms are equipped with RESNET, a high speed network connecting to the Internet and the library's on-line resources. There are two connections in each room.

To use RESNET you will need:

  • a correctly installed Network Interface Card (NIC), sometimes called an ethernet adapter
  • an ethernet cable: a 25' cable length will give you maximum flexibility independent of furniture layout

If you need help connecting to RESNET, contact the University Help Desk (note: IT staff is limited to one and a half hours getting your NIC working and the system connected to RESNET.)  Before a computer is connected to the University's RESNET network, our connection software checks to verify that updates to the computer's operating system are current. No exceptions!

What software is recommended for incoming students?
The core application software we recommend is Microsoft Office 2010 because it is used by instructors and most students. We require all computers connecting to the campus computer network to have some spy-ware protection and virus protection software installed. Download links for virus and spy-ware protection may be found at our RESNET web pages.

Can students purchase software at a discount? If so, how?
With a copy of your acceptance letter or University ID, students can purchase software at a substantial academic discount on line at either http://www.selectstudent.com/aicup/, or http://www.journeyed.com/select. Discounts apply to most Microsoft products.
