Amore and Johnson Named DeSales Employees of the Year
Joan Johnson, secretary for admissions, and Dr. Gregg Amore, director of the counseling center, have been named Employees of the Year at DeSales University. The award is given annually to a professional and a support staff member in recognition of outstanding service. Recipients are distinguished for their commitment to the University's mission, witness to the values for which the University stands, and service marked by such characteristics as effort, skill, positive attitude and creativity in the work place.
Johnson, the Support Staff Employee of the Year, joined the DeSales staff as a part-time employee 15 years ago. Three years later, she began full-time work as a secretary in the registrar's office, where she enjoyed the close interaction with the students. For the past 6 years, Johnson has been dedicated to helping incoming freshman and their families with the enrollment process at the University.
In the 15 years that Johnson has been working at DeSales, she has seen many changes but cites the school's recent growth as the biggest and most beneficial change.
"I feel honored that Fr. O'Connor and his cabinet even considered me for this award," said Johnson, "It is easy to do a good job when you not only enjoy what you do, but you get the privilege to work with special people who respect each other."
Johnson, a native of Hellertown, is an avid reader, and enjoys knitting and sewing along with entertaining. She is married and has three children and two grandchildren.
Amore, the Professional Staff Employee of the Year, has been at DeSales for 34 years and proudly claims that he has never taken a sick day in all that time. He began as a faculty member in psychology and director of the counseling program, while also serving as advisor for the PACE program at DeSales. He was founder of the DeSales Child Development Center, the department of psychology and the Professional Development Center, which was a center to help provide services to students with disability challenges that were not offered in the local area schools at that time.
"It is humbling to be recognized for doing something you love," said Amore. "I have had nothing but a wonderful experience here because, to me, it doesn't feel like work. I work with great people who do great work. This makes it easy."
Amore, a Nazareth resident, is a member of the American Psychological Association and the National Association of Entrepreneurs. His hobbies include aviation, tending to his farm and winery. Since 1973, he has participated in competitive natural bodybuilding and has won over 140 awards, including four national championships, and the prestigious 2000 Grandmasters World Championship in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
