DeSales Bulldogs Receive #2 Seed, Play Messiah in NCAA Regional Opener
The NCAA announced early on Monday morning (May 16, 2005) that the DeSales University baseball team will be the #2 seed in this week's NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Baseball Tournament hosted by the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA.
The Bulldogs (31-8) will face Messiah College (27-12-1), the automatic qualifier from the Commonwealth Conference, in the second game on Thursday, May 19, beginning at 3:00 pm. DSU is 6-3 all-time vs. the Falcons and have won four of the last five meetings. The two teams have not met however since the 2001 season which DeSales won, 6-1.
DeSales will be led by the 2005 Freedom Conference Player of the Year senior Ian Hauze (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and the 2005 Freedom Conference Pitcher of the Year junior Matt Reppert (Allentown, PA/Dieruff).
Hauze leads the team in hitting at .450 with team-highs in hits (67), runs scored (50), doubles (19) and stolen bases (11). He also has four home runs and has knocked in 41 runs. Reppert was named the Conference Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. He is 7-2 with a team-low 1.34 ERA in nine starts and 67 innings. Reppert has fanned 57 batters, owns five complete-games, one shutout and opponents are hitting just .244 off him. As a team, DeSales is hitting .358 and has a 2.95 ERA.
The Bulldogs will be making its sixth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and its eighth overall. DSU won the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in 2003 and own a 9-10 record in its previous seven appearances in Regional play. Overall, DeSales is 9-12 in the NCAA Tournament.
The #1 seed in the tournament will be Rowan University (37-7), one of three teams across the country to earn an at-large bid. The Profs will face the #6 seed Franklin & Marshall College (25-14), the automatic qualifier from the Centennial Conference, in the first game on Thursday at 11:00 am. The #3 seed Alvernia College (36-4), the automatic qualifier from the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, will face the #4 seed The College of New Jersey (34-11), the automatic qualifier from the New Jersey Athletic Conference, in the final game of day one at 7:00 pm.
All the games will be broadcast live locally by Ross Smith and WPAZ 1370. In addition to listening on the radio in the local area, you can log onto the internet and listen to the game via the radio stations live audio page on its web site. All Tournament games will be broadcast all four days.

Ticket prices for the tournament are per game $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students or you can buy a tournament pass good for all four days and all games at $20.00 per adult and $10.00 per student. The stadium will be cleared following each game.
