Timothy E. Nolan '77 Named Chairman of the Board of Trustees at DeSales University
Timothy E. Nolan, senior vice president of Coventry Health Care, Inc., has been named the new chairman of the board of trustees at DeSales University. Nolan was elected at a meeting of the board of trustees held earlier this month. His appointment to the three-year term, effective July 1, 2005, was announced by Father Bernard O'Connor, OSFS, president of DeSales. Nolan, a 1977 graduate of DeSales, is the fourth person and first alumnus to serve as chairman of the board of trustees at DeSales.
Nolan replaces Gerald A. White, retired senior vice president of finance at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., who served as board chairman at DeSales for 17 years. White was the first layman to serve in that capacity at DeSales University.
"It would be hard to overstate the contribution of Mr. Gerald White to the success of DeSales University. His wise counsel and steady leadership at the highest level of the institution has been key to our amazing growth and our excellence," said Father O'Connor. "It is equally hard to overstate the promise contained in the election of our first alumnus as Chairman of the Board. Mr. Timothy Nolan is a seasoned professional with strong managerial skills and wonderful friends among the alums of DeSales. The past is grand; the future is bright."
In addition to his role as senior vice president with the parent company headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Nolan serves as president and CEO of Coventry Health Care of Delaware, Inc., based in Wilmington, Del. He also has senior management oversight of Coventry Health Care's health plans operating in West Virginia and Virginia. Prior to joining Coventry Health Care, he was president and COO for Cybear, a technology company based in Florida. Earlier in his career, Nolan held various executive management positions with Aetna U.S. Healthcare and U.S. Healthcare.
A native of Philadelphia, Nolan graduated from Archbishop Ryan High School. He earned a B.S. in biology from DeSales and an MBA from New York University. He and his wife, Kathleen, a 1979 graduate of DeSales, currently reside in Newtown, Pa., and have two daughters, Colleen and Maura.
"I would like to thank Father O'Connor and the Board for their support," said Nolan. "This is a wonderful opportunity for the board and the University to move to the next level of development, as DeSales celebrates its 40th anniversary. The board and administration have nurtured the University to the point where alumni are able to accept this responsibility."
White, a resident of Center Valley, Pa., joined the board of trustees in 1983. He served on the finance and budget committee, the executive committee, and the board affairs committee. In 1988, he was elected chairman of the board. Prior to White, the Rev. John Conmy, OSFS, followed by the Rev. J. Stuart Dooling, OSFS, had served as board chairman.
"I was fortunate to work with Father J. Stuart Dooling, his successor Father Dan Gambet, and then Father O'Connor, three extraordinary individuals who provided outstanding leadership to DeSales during their respective terms as president," said White. "My 22 years on the board of trustees also enabled me to appreciate the richness of Salesian traditions and the power of Salesian values in the everyday lives of people today. It has been a truly rewarding experience."
