Michael J. Krajsa, Member of Business Faculty at DeSales, Wins Teaching Excellence Award

Michael J. Krajsa, a faculty member in the department of business at DeSales University, is the recipient of the ACBSP (Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs) Teaching Excellence Award for Region 2, (Eastern).

The ACBSP, established in 1988, is a specialized accreditation agency for business education with more than 360 educational institutions as members. The Teaching Excellence Award recognizes individuals who exemplify excellence in teaching. Krajsa is one of eight regional winners nationwide to receive this honor.

As one of the regional winners, Krajsa will attend the ACBSP Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., June 24 - 27, at which time he will receive a medallion and a check for $100. The regional winners also attend the annual conference as nominees for the International Teaching Excellence Award and will be recognized during the Salute to Regions Luncheon on Sunday, June 26.

The winner of the international award also will be announced during the luncheon on June 26. The presentation of this prestigious award is considered one of the high points of the conference. The winner of the international award will receive a plaque and a check for $500, and have his / her name inscribed on a permanent honor roll maintained at the ACBSP office.

According to Dr. Karen D. Walton, provost and vice president for academic affairs at DeSales, Krajsa draws from his broad and deep professional experience to educate students as to how the business world works and what it takes for them to succeed in the real world.

"Mr. Krajsa is an outstanding teacher," said Walton. "He is an extremely motivational educator who convinces his students that learning is not a spectator sport."

Krajsa, an expert in management and marketing, and strategic business planning, joined the DeSales faculty full time in 2002, after serving as an MBA marketing faculty member since 1999. He is a partner with Halcyon Strategic Marketing Consulting. Prior to that, he was director of development and public affairs with LifePath Inc., Bethlehem. Also, he served as executive director of the HGF Group, Allentown, a multi-million dollar conglomerate consisting of 14 McDonald's Restaurants, radio stations, Skyking Airways, and Evergreen Realty, among other companies. Earlier in his career, he held executive and legislative staff positions and worked with international human rights organizations.

While at DeSales, Krajsa has taught MBA and undergraduate courses in entrepreneurship, management and marketing, international marketing, and consumer behavior. He is active with numerous groups, including the university president's globalization task force.

Krajsa serves as mentor to the DeSales SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team, which he began in 2003 with a group of 12 students. The team has won recognition in regional competition and accomplished Rookie-of-the-Year honors that same year. In August of 2004, Mike and the SIFE team took a two-week educational expedition to Peru to create cultural, business and service opportunities that will help students prepare for futures in the global economy. The trip was funded by a grant through the Business and International Education Program of the U.S. Department of Education.

Glenn Berdela, Jr., a junior majoring in accounting at DeSales, is an active member of the SIFE team and also took part in the expedition to Peru. Berdela, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., is one of many DeSales students who value all the SIFE experiences and are grateful to Krajsa for the opportunities. According to Berdela, Krajsa has helped him realize the importance of thinking for yourself, working hard early to achieve greatness, and to appreciate other opinions.

Krajsa received his undergraduate degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and his master's degree from Penn State University. He resides in Coopersburg, Pa.
