Cardinal's denunciation of "Da Vinci Code" an unusual move

Article by Tim Blangger on comment by top Vatican cardinal about "The Da Vinci Code" includes comments by Dr. Larry Chapp, associate professor of philosophy and theology at DeSales. The statement by Cardinal Tarcisco Bertone urging Catholics to not read the book is the first high-level Vatican response on the bestseller by Dan Brown. The condemnation, while not a formal church response or monitum, is considered significant. According to Chapp, this sort of response is very unusual because Vatican officials usually don't comment on popular culture. He sees it as "a measure of how seriously they are taking this wretched book."
