DeSales PA Program Defends National Title at Challenge Bowl in New Orleans, May 23
The DeSales University PA (Physicians Assistant) Program will be competing in the Thirteenth Annual Student Challenge Bowl in New Orleans on Friday, May 23. Sponsored by the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the competition is held during the organization's annual convention, which attracts more than 10,000 physician assistants nationwide.
The fast-moving and highly competitive event lasts two hours. It features 10-minute, question-and-answer periods on medically and surgically related topics. Each program fields a team of three students and one alternate. The students respond as a team and have 10 seconds to answer each question, with the level of difficulty of questions increasing in each round. The team with the highest score will advance to the next round.
The first round of the event will feature 44 teams in 11 different games. Winners of the first round will advance to the second round, where they will meet the five winners of regional competitions.
The winners of the regional competitions automatically advance to the second round. DeSales won the Northeastern Regional Competition in March allowing them to advance to the second round. A total of 49 teams out of a possible 136 nationwide take part in the event.
The DeSales Physicians Assistant Program admitted its first class in 1997 and graduated its first students in 1999. Christine Bruce has served as director of the program since 1996.
At the Convention Center in New Orleans, DeSales will be competing against Duke, Wake Forest, Emory and other schools, many with programs established more than 30 years ago.
Although DeSales has graduated only four classes, it has had an impressive record. DeSales has won all four Pennsylvania State Medical Challenge Bowls, the only two Northeast Regional Challenge Bowls that it entered and the National Challenge Bowl last year in Boston, Massachusetts.
