Article by Warren Kagarise on the finals of this season's "Scholastic
Scrimmage," the popular high school academic competition broadcast on PBS
39 for 30 years, includes comments from Dr. Karen Walton, provost and vice
president of academics at DeSales. As program host, Walton quizzes top
students about all academic disciplines. The format of the30-minute show,
which runs from October to May, is similar to a game show. Students from
Lehigh Valley area high schools serve as contestants. They buzz in answers
to a multitude of questions on a variety of subjects, including current
events, history, mathematics and science, and confer with teammates to win
bonus points. According to Walton, about 64 questions are asked per game.
Winners of the 2005 Scholastic Scrimmage Contest were students from
Allentown Central Catholic High School. The winning school receives a
$4,000 scholarship and the runner-up, a $2,000 scholarship. The winning
team receives medals, a plaque for the school's trophy case and bragging
rights. "It's a wonderful opportunity to recognize the best and the
brightest," said Walton.
