Glenn Berdela, Jr., Named the 2005 - 2006 William G. McGowan Scholar at DeSales
Glenn Berdela, Jr., of East Stroudsburg, Pa., has been named the 2005 - 2006 William G. McGowan Scholar at DeSales University. The McGowan Fund awards one tuition scholarship - either undergraduate or graduate - to each school selected annually to participate. More than 60 colleges and universities have been invited to take part in the McGowan Scholars program. Scholars are chosen on the basis of academic performance, grade point average, a submitted essay, and other selected criteria. Berdela is the first DeSales student to receive this honor.
Berdela, a senior with a double major, is pursuing a bachelor of science in accounting and in management of information technology, with a minor in computer science. He has a GPA of 3.9 and has been on the Dean's List the past five consecutive semesters. He is a member of Kappa Xi chapter of Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society in Business Administration, a member of Delta Delta Chapter of the National Honor Society, and an award winner in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
In the summer of 2004, Berdela traveled to Peru as part of a contingent from DeSales University who were engaged in a multi-cultural project to help foster regional competitiveness in the global economy. The trip was funded by a grant through the Business and International Education Program of the U.S. Department of Education.
Presently, Berdela is in the Marine Corps' Platoon Leaders Class in Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Va., through August 12. He will return to DeSales for his senior year. Upon graduation, he will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
The McGowan Scholars program is part of the McGowan Charitable Fund, established in 1992. The Fund provides financial assistance to those organizations and causes that reflect the visions, concerns and lifetime experiences of its founder, William G. McGowan, a pioneer in the telecommunications industry and the founder and longtime chairman of MCI Communications Corp.
The scholars program awards selected colleges and universities with scholarships to help students who wish to pursue a business education. Colleges and universities that have business programs accredited by the International Association for Management education (AACSB) or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACSBSP) may apply for the scholarship program.
