DeSales University Establishes Catholic Leadership Program
The Salesian Center for Faith and Culture at De Sales University will offer a one-year leadership development program to select members of the student body. The program, which will begin August 2005, was developed by the Catholic Leadership Institute (CLI) and is made possible through a grant from the Ryan Family Foundation.
The "Catholic Hero's Journey," as the program is called, is based on CLI's Leadership Development program. This award-winning interactive program helps participants grow in mind, body, and soul and prepares the students to take on leadership roles in their campus, spiritual, and personal lives. The University will sponsor 25 students annually, as part of the program.
Fr. Thomas Dailey, OSFS, director of the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture at DeSales, explains, "The University's patron saint, Francis de Sales, championed the idea that holiness is for every person, not just monks and nuns, and that the devout life can and should be lived in the midst of worldly professions. We believe that his saintly wisdom, coupled with the successful dynamics of the CLI programs, will offer our best students the opportunity to grow in unique and lasting ways. Our goal in this collaborative venture is to help the next generation always to realize the Salesian maxim to 'be who you are, and be that well'."
Matt Manion, president and CEO of CLI, explains, "'The Catholic Hero's Journey' program incorporates Salesian Christian Humanism into our three-day Leadership Experiential Adventure Program—LEAP—followed by twelve monthly BE IT—Be Energized and Inspired Together—meetings." In addition to developing clarity about their God-given mission and purpose, students who participate in the program will come away with the courage and skills to lead their fellow students."
Students who are elected to participate in the program will attend the three-day LEAP retreat, at which they will be encouraged to discover their special gifts and talents and learn how to apply these talents in ways that maximize the impact of their efforts. They will also participate in 10 monthly meetings with fellow LEAP graduates. These students will maintain a support network with whom they can share their experiences and challenges and motivate each other to achieve their goals.
The Salesian Center for Faith and Culture finds its inspiration and its direction in the Salesian Christian Humanism preached by St. Francis de Sales. The Center directs research into the many facets of Salesian spirituality that have an impact on the modern world. The Center provides a variety of public forums for dialogue about how faith and culture mutually interact. And the Center partners with various academic and professional organizations in the region to broaden the impact that Salesian spirituality can have in today's culture.
