DeSales University Celebrates International Week, Oct. 12 to 19, With a Host of Activities

DeSales University will celebrate International Week from October 12 to 19, with a host of activities that honor countries around the world and encourage the embrace of other cultures. Week-long festivities will feature international music, film, food, fun and other cultural delights representing countries including Ireland, Peru, Jamaica, India, Japan, and the USA. The event is being coordinated through the DeSales University Office of Multicultural and International Affairs. Festivities include:

On Wednesday, October 12

  • Noon, Communications Club Bake Sale, SIFE survey and free M&Ms
  • 4:00 p.m., a parade of flags with students along designated pathway in the mall. Students will gather for a photo in grassy area in front of McShea Student Union
  • 5:00 p.m., students will proceed to the Commons in McShea where the judging and viewing of the Children's Art Contest
  • 5:15 p.m., opening of the International Food Fest Progressive Dinner in McShea Commons. Residence halls with their international offerings are: Brisson and Chappuis (Italy) - bruchetta; Aviat Hall (Mexico) - enchaladas ; Heights / OMIA (Thailand) - Tom Ka Gai Soup. Dechantal (Southern) - black-eyed peas and rice; Tocik (Puerto Rico) - flautas; Welsh (British Isles) - scones and tea; and Conmy (Slovakia) - pierogies
  • 5:45 p.m., hanging of flags in McShea
  • 6:30 p.m., International desserts will be available in the University Center

On Thursday, October 13

  • 9:00 a.m., Spanish Alliance Phrase of the Day
  • Noon, Communications Club Bake Sale
  • 12:30 p.m., Show Your Green, Spirit of Ireland
  • 1:00 p.m., members of the DeSales Chorale will sing in the University Center
  • 4:00 p.m., First Annual Tri-Cycle 4 x 4 Relay Race
  • 4:45 p.m., a celebration of Ireland will include Irish food in the cafeteria
  • 5:00 p.m., an over 21 Pub Night in McShea Student Union for students, faculty, and staff
  • 8:00 p.m., the screening of the film, "Circle of Friends"

On Friday, October 13

  • 9:00 a.m., Spanish Alliance Phrase of the Day
  • Noon, Communications Club Bake Sale
  • 12:30 p.m., the Andean pan flute band, Fortalese, will perform in the University Center
  • 4:30 p.m., Peruvian food in the University Center
  • 5:15 p.m., Pinata time in the University Center
  • 7:00 p.m., SIFE presentation in the Fireside Room in the University Center

On Saturday, October 15

  • Noon, the United States celebration will feature the wearing of your red, white and blue spirit. Also, a dunk tank fundraiser, American food and patriotic music in the University Center

On Monday, October 17

  • Jamaican lobster racing and wagering will be held at 7 p.m. in McShea Student Union

On Tuesday, October 18:

  • Noon, Indian food in the University Center
  • Henna tattoo artist in the Fireside Lounge in the University Center
  • 7:00 p.m., the film, "American Desi," in McShea Student Union
  • 9:00 p.m., hypnotist Dr. Bengali in McShea Student Union

On Wednesday, October 18, final day of celebrations

  • 9:00 a.m., Spanish Alliance Phrase of the Day
  • Communications Club Bake Sale
  • Noon, an origami workshop in the University Center.
    Also, Brown Bag Lunch Series in Trexler Library will feature artist Phil Stein on "The Global State '05: What is Progressive?"
  • 4:00 p.m., Women's Leadership recognition ceremony
  • 5:00 p.m., Japanese food in the University Center
  • 5:00 p.m., Japanese Taiko drum group, Taikoza,will perform traditional Japanese Taiko in McShea Student Union
  • 9:00 p.m., Japanese anime film, McShea Student Union
