Take a Class With Students From Around the World at DeSales University
Students from India, South Africa, Taiwan, Romania, and South Korea will join DeSales University students in an International Sports Tourism course beginning January 4, 2006. The goal of the class is to provide international students exposure to American culture and sports, and international experience for students in the United States. Dr. Douglas M. Turco, professor and director of sport management at DeSales, will conduct the class on the Internet through video lectures, power point slides, e-mail, and discussion boards.
Students from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, in Calcutta, India, are committed to the course, as are students from the Romanian American University, in Bucharest, Romania. Also, students from the German Sport Institute in Cologne, Germany, and from the University of Cape Town in South Africa, will also be involved in the class.
The course will consist of projects where the students will work together through e-mail, discussion boards, and web cam to develop a destination analysis regarding sport tourism. Turco will present information on-line through pre-recorded lectures, power point slides, and discussion boards, for the students to access at any time.
"The teams will consist of at least one student from each country, and the students will communicate on their own time and coordinate accordingly," said Turco. "The class will be a true cultural learning experience for all the students."
Turco is the author of the book Sport Tourism, and has delivered over 40 international presentations on the subject. His interest began in the late 1980s, when he began a research project to attract tourists to a winter sports festival in New Mexico. Turco then moved to Illinois and began working with small communities to help them understand tourists and introduced sports events, such as youth basketball and baseball tournaments. He is currently working with colleagues on the World Cup being held in South Africa. Turco earned a B.S. in health, physical education, and recreation from the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico.
