Wednesdays in the Commons at DeSales Presents Readings by Contemporary Poets

Six poets from the Lehigh Valley area who collaborated on a recent anthology will read from their works from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., on Wednesday, February 15, in McShea Student Union at DeSales. The program, part of the University's Wednesdays in the Commons series, is open to the public, free of charge.

Poets Barbara Crooker, Harry Humes, Paul Martin, Ann Michael, and Len Roberts, will join Dr. Steve Myers, department chair of humanities at DeSales, in a "coming-out" party for "Common Wealth: Contemporary Poets on Pennsylvania," the newly released anthology from Penn State University Press. Jerry Wemple, associate professor of English at Bloomsburg University, who is one of the two editors of the collection, will be joining this elite group of poets as a guest reader.

"Poetry in English has a long history of celebrating 'the local'," said Myers. "You think of Wordsworth's Lake District, Whitman's Manhattan, Frost's New England, Carlos Williams's Patterson. What the editors of Common Wealth, Marjorie Maddux and Jerry Wemple, have done is given us "extreme local." Pennsylvanians as done by Pennsylvanians, all living and breathing and working today."

The poets will read from their own works as presented in the book, and will read representative work of other poets writing about life and landscape in other regions of the state.

"What's especially nice about the upcoming DeSales reading, as Len Roberts has already pointed out, is that the poets who will gather have all known each other as friends and fellow-strivers for a very long time," continued Myers. "The reading will be part literary event, part reunion for all of us."

The Wednesdays in the Commons series, established last fall, offers a variety of multicultural events featuring Celtic dance and music, poetry readings by contemporary poets, Russian folk dancing, acoustic blues guitar, swing band and dancing, among others.
