Visiting Film Artist Series at DeSales University Presents "Dance on Film," Tuesday, February 21
The new and growing film genre, Dance on Film, will be the focus of a community workshop from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 21, in the auditorium of the Priscilla Payne Hurd Science Center at DeSales University. The program is the second of three in the Visiting Artist Film Series funded by a grant from the Dexter F. and Dorothy H. Baker Foundation. The event is open to the public free of charge.
Guest speaker, Deirdre Towers, artistic director of Dance Films Association, will discuss the growing art form and present film clips from recent winners of the New York City Dance on Camera Festival. The nine-minute dance film, "Astralagus," by Toni Vidaechea, of Spain, also will be shown. The film was the winner of the 2004 VideoDansa competition in Barcelona, and features a haunting solo by dancer and choreographer Olga Sasplugas.
Earlier in the day, Towers will address students in a workshop from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the Air Products Room of Trexler Library at DeSales.
"This event is sure to be insightful and inspiring, as it will be a window into how dance artists and film makers around the world are collaborating to make captivating new work," said Timothy Cowart, director of dance at DeSales University. "The event is a great way to introduce people to the innovative medium of choreography for the camera."
The Visiting Film Artist Series at DeSales, established in fall 2005, is designed to benefit DeSales students and the Lehigh Valley performing arts community. The series of master classes and public presentations are a celebration of creative, intellectual and cultural diversity. The third workshop during the spring 2006 semester will be held on Tuesday, March 14.
