Announcement that DeSales University is sponsoring the second National Catholic Essay Contest, open to high school seniors across the country. The purpose of the contest is to recognize excellence in writing by young people that shares the distinctiveness of Catholic thought. Entries were due by January 9. Dr. Brian Kane, associate professor and chairperson in the department of philosophy and theology at DeSales, states, "There are many young Catholics who have a developed sense of what their faith means. We want to provide a way for them to share their vision with their peers and with the Church." Kane directs the essay contest. Contest winners receive scholarships to DeSales. The topic for this year's essay, students are asked to interpret the place of art in their culture and use a quote from Pope John Paul II from his Letter to Artists on Easter Sunday, 1999.
