Two DeSales Students Among Top Performers in National Stock Contest

Two students from DeSales University have been named among the top 34 students nationwide taking part in the Barron's Challenge, a national stock-picking contest currently in progress for the spring 2006 semester. The latest rankings, available on the Barron's Challenge Web site, are current as of February 1. The competition, which will end on May 15, is open to students and professors at accredited institutions throughout the country.

The DeSales students who are among the top performers in the Challenge include David Graver, '06, of Lancaster, Pa., a double major in marriage and the family and also in theology, who is in 25th place. Also, Mike Zinn, '06, of Hanover, Pa., a double major in mathematics and in secondary education, who is in 34th place.

Charles Finady, assistant professor of business at DeSales, got students involved with the contest, as part of his personal finance class. According to Finady, the contest provides students with a good opportunity to learn about stocks. Also, although real money is not used in the challenge, students do have a chance to win money if they place in the top 10.

"The goal for participating in this challenge is to teach students the long and short term effects in the world of investing," said Finady. "It gives students realistic concepts without exposing them to risk. I'm very impressed with how well the students are performing in this challenge."

Both Graver and Zinn feel the competition has been a great learning experience.

"What I will take away from the challenge is a better awareness of financial risks," said Graver. "I have gained a personal understanding of what I would do if I had the money."

"My method for picking stocks that have performed strongly has been successful," said Zinn. "I plan to use this method of finding stocks when I invest real money in the future."

Finady's class requirements include a written two-page essay on their experience in the Barron's Challenge.

This is the second year in a row that DeSales has participated in the competition. In the previous Challenge, which ended in May 2005, DeSales business student Russell Susko, '05, of Hackettstown,N.J., finished in 10th place nationally. More than 2,300 students nationwide took part in the contest. According to Finady, the performance by Susko was outstanding.
