Undergraduate biology students in the B.S. program at DeSales University receive academic and practical preparation to enter careers immediately in such diverse areas as:
- Government and Industry Biotechnology Labs
- Pharmaceutical Development and Sales
- University, Government, and Industry Research
- Laboratories and Criminology Laboratories
The Program of Studies leading to a B.S. degree in Biology includes traditional courses in foundational biology, with an emphasis in chemistry, mathematics and physics. Strong foundations are provided for the student at both the molecular and cellular level, and at the organismic level of system interaction. Research and the methodology of science is a crucial component of our students' learning. This begins as students complete and present simple research activities in their first year, and progress to the completion of a significant senior research project in their final year of study. Students work one-on-one with a faculty mentor in these senior projects which are often presented in professional meetings.
Graduates from the Biology Program have continued their education in a wide variety of settings. Among the programs in which our graduates have excelled are those at:
- Harvard Medical School
- Lehigh University
- Temple University
- The University of Michigan
- Jefferson University School of Medicine
- The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine at Hershey
- Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
- Temple University Medical School
- The University of Notre Dame
- The University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School
A Well-Developed Internship Program provides students with an early real-world experience of possible career directions and placements. From these experiences students come to understand early where their interests and talents may take them in life. A great strength of our program is the individualized attention available to our students which helps them discern how best to make their education match their goals and which tailors that education to best fit their needs.
For those students who will continue their education in professional or academic graduate programs, DeSales University and the Natural Science Department provide many ways to provide them the best possible opportunity for admission to graduate programs. These students receive specialized course work, and participate in volunteer and internship experiences which help them discern their professional calling and which place them at a competitive advantage for admission to graduate schools. In addition a select committee of diverse faculty members, the Pre-Professional Advisory Committee assists these students individually through the application process.
