DeSales University's Natural Science Club to Host Environment Day 2006
More than 400 elementary school children from the area will be attending.

Environment Day 2006, sponsored by the Natural Science Club of DeSales University, will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 and Wednesday, April 26, in Billera Hall at DeSales. More than 400 elementary school children from the Lehigh Valley area are expected to participate in activities during the two days. The goal of the annual event is to educate second and third graders on different environmental topics.

"The students will be able to participate in 10 stations that will educate them on current environmental issues and also include some fun activities," said Dr. Francis Mayville, assistant professor of chemistry at DeSales. "They will learn about recycling, outdoor life, forest animals, endangered species, among other things."

The Natural Science Club at DeSales has been hosting this event since spring 2001. This year, students from Moravian Academy, Palmer, Forks, St. Ann's, Sheridan, Easton Catholic, St. Michael's, Western Salisbury, Lincoln, Freemansburg, William Penn and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary schools will be participating.

Upon arrival at DeSales, the children will be divided into 15 groups. Each group will rotate through each program every 10 minutes. All presenters are DeSales students, except Mayville and Renee Fair, department secretary for natural science at DeSales.

About 40 DeSales students are involved in the event. DeSales students who helped to coordinate the event are: Kristin Kurek, '06, of Mullica Hill, N.J.; Brad Bauer, '06, of Bally, Pa.; Nicole Korovich, '07, of Brodheadsville, Pa.; Meg Zawisza, '07, of Orwigsburg, Pa., and Erin Frey, '07, of Hellertown, Pa.

"We feel that the children will have fun learning about the importance of protecting the environment," said Mayville.

For more information, contact Dr. Francis Mayville, assistant professor of chemistry at DeSales, at 610-282-1100, ext. 1382.
