DeSales University Holds Fifth Annual Hair Drive For Locks of Love, Wednesday, April 26
Students, faculty and staff from DeSales University will take part in the fifth annual hair drive for Locks of Love from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, in McShea Commons on the DeSales campus. Seven local salons will be on hand to give free haircuts for those donating their hair. The event is open to the public. Hair donations should be at least 10 inches long (tip to tip), clean and dry, and free from chemical damage, although permed and dyed hair is permitted.
The salons include Secrets in Hellertown, Cindy's Hair Design in Hellertown, Kutz N Kurlz in Hellertown, Hair by Ann in Center Valley, Shear Perfection in Quakertown, Cuts & Styles in Allentown and All About hair in Bethlehem.
Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under 18 who suffer from medical hair loss. The children receive the hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need. The hairpieces provided by Locks of Love are custom made for each child. They are vacuum-fitted and can be worn while swimming, showering and other activities that children do. Though having a hairpiece is certainly not a cure for any of the conditions suffered by the recipients, it can help ease some social discomforts.
The goal of the DeSales Locks of Love hair drive is to raise $1000 and at least 300 inches of hair. Currently, 25 people are pre-registered, including DeSales students, faculty, staff and alumni, and also members of the community at large.
For more information on the hair drive, contact Magdalene "Maggie" Riggins, assistant director of campus ministry, at 610-282-1100, ext. 1313.
