Phillip Yetter Named the 2006 - 2007 William G. McGowan Scholar at DeSales University

Phillip Yetter, a DeSales University senior majoring in management and finance, has been named the 2006 - 2007 William G. McGowan Scholar at DeSales University. The McGowan Charitable Fund awards one tuition scholarship - either undergraduate or graduate - to each school selected annually to participate. More than 60 colleges and universities have been invited to take part in the McGowan Scholars program.

McGowan Scholars are chosen on the basis of academic performance, grade point average, a submitted essay, and other selection criteria. Yetter, a resident of Saylorsburg, Pa., is only the second student in DeSales history to receive this honor. Last year's recipient, Glenn Berdela, Jr., '06, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., was the first DeSales student to be named a McGowan Scholar. Berdela graduated magna cum laude from DeSales this May, with a bachelor's degree in accounting and management information technology.

Yetter, a Dean's List student, has a GPA of 3.35 and is on the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Academic Honor Roll. MASCAC recognizes student-athletes who are upperclassmen (sophomores or higher) with at least a 3.20 GPA and have competed in varsity athletics at their institution for the entire fall season. Yetter also is a member of Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE).

An accomplished soccer player, Yetter serves as team captain on the varsity soccer team. He has an advanced regional coaching diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He also helped coach and facilitate soccer learning sessions for children age 3 to 5 with the Quakertown Soccer Club, and helped organize fundraisers for the organization.

Yetter had the opportunity to perfect his entrepreneurial skills while working at Saylorsburg Lumber Company, Inc., a family-owned business, as a customer service facilitator from 1999 to 2006. Yetter also founded his own business in firewood sales, also in Saylorsburg.

"I am very honored to receive the prestigious McGowan Scholarship," said Yetter. "I feel extremely fortunate, as a DeSales student looking to a future in business, and consider the award one of my greatest accomplishments," said Yetter.

The McGowan Scholars program is part of the McGowan Charitable Fund, established in 1992. The Fund provides financial assistance to those organizations and causes that reflect the visions, concerns and lifetime experiences of its founder, William G. McGowan, a pioneer in the telecommunications industry and the founder and longtime chairman of MCI Communications Corp.

The scholars program awards selected colleges and universities with scholarships to help students who wish to pursue a business education. Colleges and universities that have business programs accredited by the International Association for Management education (AACSB) or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) may apply for the scholarship program.

DeSales University, in Center Valley, Pa., is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Founded by the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales in 1965, the 350-acre suburban campus is located 50 miles north of Philadelphia and about 90 miles south of New York City. DeSales has an enrollment of 1,756 full-time undergraduate students, 70 percent of whom live on campus. A total enrollment of approximately 3,000 includes undergraduate day and evening students, and graduate students. In addition to a variety of degree and professional programs in different disciplines, the university offers the ACCESS Program, the region's leading accelerated degree program for adults.
