First Annual Le Tour DeSales Proves Exciting and Colorful

The inaugural Le Tour DeSales collegiate bicycling race, held July 1 and 2 at the DeSales Easton and Center Valley campuses, proved to be exciting for participants and observers alike. More than two dozen racers, including ones from schools such as Stanford, Bucknell, Cedar Crest College, Cornell, Drexel, James Madison, Lebanon Valley, Lehigh and Penn State, took part in the colorful two-stage event. Sponsors included the International Cycling Center (ICC), DeSales University and the Lehigh Wheelmen Association.

Points for Traveling Trophies were awarded in accordance with the NCAA breakdown to qualified racers in the men's and women's divisions. Prizes were awarded per day per race.

According to Dr. Paul Shrivastava, president of the ICC, the DeSales campus provided the perfect venue for the exciting inaugural race. The lovely setting offers all the essential elements that make it ideally suited for a variety of activities, including bicycling.

"The Lehigh Valley already has a vibrant bicycling community, but through this race, the ICC and DeSales are adding a collegiate bicycling component to the area that has been missing," said Shrivastava. "We are confident that as this race grows, it will help attract even more students and tourists to the area."

The inaugural Le Tour DeSales was the result of a planning effort that began in August 2005, by DeSales, the ICC and the Lehigh Valley Wheelmen.

It also involved students in the sport event planning class taught by Dr. Douglas Turco, professor and director of sport management at DeSales, who developed a feasibility study for the race as a semester project. Sport management students Jonathon Kindred, '08, of Nazareth, Pa., and Antony May, '08, of Lowell, Mass., continued the planning and helped to carry out the production of Le Tour DeSales.

Race promoters hope to make the bicycling race an annual event. According to Turco, race planners received many positive comments about DeSales University as an ideal race venue, in regards to the beautiful setting, as well as the design and safety of the race course.

"Activating a sporting event from the drawing board and finally witnessing participants enjoying the competition gives sport managers a great sense of satisfaction," said Turco. "Later this month, plans will begin for next year's event, in which we hope to have several entries from the new DeSales Cycling Club."

The two-stage event for this year's inaugural Le Tour DeSales included:

On Saturday, July 1, Le Tour DeSales was held on Emrick Blvd. at the DeSales Easton campus where racers rode clockwise on a one-mile big ring loop, slight uphill, smooth surface and completed two sweeping and two 90-degree corners.

On Sunday, July 2, Le Tour DeSales was held on the DeSales main campus in Center Valley where racers rode clockwise on a 2.45 mile loop, short climb, on a newly paved road.

Among the winners were:
