DeSales University to Offer Spanish For Health Care Professionals, Sept. 12 to Dec. 19
In an effort to foster cultural understanding and help healthcare professionals better serve the growing Hispanic community, the Center for Professional Development at DeSales University will offer Spanish for Health Care Professionals. The 15-week certificate program is designed to help medical professionals gain a working knowledge of Spanish. It will be offered at the Center Valley campus from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., beginning Tuesday, September 12, through Tuesday, December 19. Registration is currently in progress. For more information, including cost, call Andy Roman, director of professional development with the Center for Professional Development at DeSales, at 610-814-3028 or email inquiries to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The program, first implemented at DeSales in 2006, is designed for all medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and healthcare specialists. It will help them speak Spanish effectively with patients and make accurate clinical decisions. The fall 2006 course has been modified slightly to focus even more on those with no previous experience of the Spanish language. The course is eligible for 36 contact hours or continuing education units (CEU) from the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association.
"Our Spanish class for health care professionals, launched in January 2006, has proven to be in great demand," said Roman. "Faculty member Pedro Medina-Martinez does an excellent job providing students with individualized attention and making the learning of the Spanish language an enjoyable experience. We are now considering advanced courses, as well."
The initial request for a customized program came from Dr. Kevin N. Waninger, M.D., of Saint Luke's Hospital and a specialist in emergency medicine, family practice and sports medicine, who expressed the need for a Spanish course specifically designed for healthcare workers to help them better serve their Hispanic patients.
Pedro Juan Medina Martinez serves as instructor for the course. Martinez specializes in bilingual education and has experience in teaching occupational Spanish, honors Spanish, and advanced placement Spanish language and literature. He has served as host and producer of a Latino educational television program on PBS for eight years.
A resident of Bethlehem, Martinez earned an M.S. in teacher education technology from Lehigh University, and an M.P.A. in public administration and a B.A. in psychology and Spanish from the University of Puerto Rico. He has a Permanent Spanish Teaching Certificate from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Presently, Martinez is pursuing an Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction from Lehigh University and teaches honors Spanish at Easton Area High School.
