International Week at DeSales to Feature Parade of Flags, Dance, Drama, Discussions and Festival, Sept. 24 to 29

DeSales University will celebrate the Third Annual International Week from Sunday, September 24 to Friday, September 29, with a host of colorful activities that honor countries around the world and encourage the embrace of other cultures. The event is open to the public free of charge.

Festivities include a Parade of Flags, West African Drum and Dance performance, Filipino dance group, skits, discussions and colorful displays. The celebration is being coordinated through the DeSales University Office of Multicultural and International Affairs, with various DeSales groups participating such as the Spanish Alliance, College Democrats, Rotorat (college-based Rotory) and SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise).

Highlights include:

Monday, September 25

  • Parade of Flags from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the mall behind McShea Student Union. More than 200 DeSales students will march with international flags. A group photo will be taken at the statue of St. Francis de Sales.
  • International Festival from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Commons of McShea Student Union. Countries represented include Argentina, Belgium, China, Egypt, Greece, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Peru, Russia, South Africa, Spain and Sweden. Samplings of certain international foods will be available. There also will be displays of some sports that are popular in various countries.
  • Brown Bag Lunch program at noon in the Air Products Room of Trexler Library with Dr. Galen Godbey, assistant to the president on globalization at DeSales, who will discuss, "Globalization, Higher Education, and the Future of DeSales University."
  • Study Abroad Information Session at 7:00 p.m. in Gallery Lounge of McShea Student Union.

Tuesday, September 26

  • Brown Bag Lunch program at noon in the reference area of Trexler Library will feature a talk on the Phillipines by Dr. Boyce Jubilan, associate professor in the department of social sciences at DeSales.
  • International Soup of the Day will be offered at 4:00 p.m. in the Commons of McShea Student Union.
  • Filipino Dance Group, FISDU, will perform at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons of McShea Student Union.

Wednesday, September 27

  • Brown Bag Lunch program, Study Abroad: A Student Perspective, at noon in the Air Products Room of Trexler Library.
  • International Soup of the Day will be offered at 4:00 p.m. in the Commons of McShea Student Union.
  • Second Annual International Week Race will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the mall behind McShea Student Union. The trophy will be presented to the winner on the patio of McShea.
  • Wednesdays in the Commons program from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Commons of McShea Student Union will feature the drama, Line in the Sand, which consists of four skits based on real-life experience of families crossing the United States - Mexico border and performed by DeSales students. The program is sponsored by Catholic Relief Services.

Thursday, September 28

  • Brown Bag Lunch program at noon in the Air Products Room of Trexler Library with Amanda DeBres on "Fair Trade Coffee."
  • International Soup of the Day will be offered at 4:00 p.m. in the Commons of McShea Student Union.
  • Presentation by Peace Activist, Jay Worral at 7:00 p.m. in Commons of McShea Student Union.

Friday, September 29

  • Kulu Mele West African Drums and Dance will give a colorful performance in traditional garb beginning at 11:45 a.m. in the University Center Dining Hall.
