Sturm Named to ESPN The Magazine All-District First-Team for the Second Straight Year
For the second straight year, DeSales University senior Randy Sturm, of North Cape May, N.J. / Lower Cape May, and member of the men's soccer team, has earned the prestigious honor by being named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First-Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).
The members of CoSIDA vote on the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Soccer team. Athletes named to their respective All-District First-Team throughout the country are forwarded to the national committee and considered for Academic All-America status.
Sturm has put together quite a senior season resume both on the soccer field and in the classroom. He currently leads the 12-4-3 Bulldogs with 27 goals and nine assists for 63 points. He owns nearly every scoring record in the DSU record book including most goals in a season (27), most career assists (24), most points in a season (63), most career points (138) and is just two goals shy of tying the record for goals in a career (59).
He has earned Freedom Conference Player of the Week honors five times and ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Week twice. Sturm has recorded five games with three or more goals, has scored four goals twice and tallied three goals in a 4-0 win over Wilkes University on Tuesday in the opening round of the Freedom Conference playoffs.
In the classroom, Sturm is an elementary education major with a 3.43 cumulative grade point average. He will be named to the MASCAC Fall All-Academic Team for the third time later this season and is a Dean's List member. Sturm enters the week ranked third among all NCAA Division III players in goals per game and fourth in points per game. His 63 points leave one point shy of moving into the top 25 all-time for most points scored in a season among all NCAA Division III institutions.
The Defending Freedom Conference champions advanced to the Freedom Conference championship game with a 4-0 win over Wilkes University on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will travel to The University of Scranton on Saturday for the title game looking to earn its second straight conference crown. Game time is set for 2:00 pm with the winner receiving an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
